"California?" Michael repeated, the word a soft puff of air. The news dropped into his lap like a lead weight, stunning him. He sat frozen, watching Chloe, her eyes shining with excitement as she described the sunshine and the beaches. A strange, almost electric buzz began to hum through his veins.

He found himself struggling to find the words to respond, each one seemed to get caught in his throat. He felt a sensation akin to watching a fireworks display, the initial explosion was stunning, and the aftermath would be the slow, agonizing descent. He couldn't help picturing the years of memories they'd made, the secrets they'd shared, the bond they had crafted.

He looked around the room, which suddenly seemed to have become too small. His hand went to his chest as if to reassure his rapidly beating heart. Their adventures would soon take separate paths, and he couldn't grasp the concept.
