Liam stared at the small, leather-bound book in his hands. It had been his grandfather's. He'd expected a collection of recipes or, perhaps, a detailed account of his grandfather's travels. Instead, the book seemed to thrum with a hidden energy.

His sister, Maya, was across the room, meticulously examining a dusty violin. She’d always had the musical talent in the family. She ran her fingers across the strings, a faint smile playing on her lips.

He flipped open the book to the first page. The parchment felt impossibly smooth, the ink a vibrant, almost luminescent black. As he began to read, a pressure built behind his eyes, a tightening in his chest. The words, initially foreign, began to translate into a language he understood implicitly, a language woven into the very fabric of his being. He forgot to breathe, consumed by the secret contained within.
