“You have a brother, Liam,” his grandmother had said, her voice raspy with age. Liam had been expecting a lecture about his unruly hair. He had not been expecting this. A brother. A living, breathing piece of his family tree that he had been previously unaware of.

Liam stared at his grandmother, his jaw slack. He felt a tingling sensation in his scalp, as if his hair was standing on end. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. His mind raced. He pictured his mother, a woman he knew as the ultimate truth. He now knew he knew nothing.

He had always felt a strange emptiness, a longing for something he couldn't name. Suddenly, this void seemed to have a shape, a name, a whole new history.
