The letter arrived in the mail, crisp and official. Amelia ripped it open, her hands shaking. She scanned the document, her eyes widening with each line. A half-brother. A blood relative she didn’t know existed.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching a movie about someone else. She stumbled back, the letter fluttering from her grasp, landing on the floor at her feet. She leaned against the kitchen counter, struggling to catch her breath.

She pictured her life, the one she had always known, and it was as though a crack had appeared in the foundation. She felt a magnetic pull, a desire to understand what this meant for her, how this new person might affect her life.
