The email arrived at work, a simple subject line: "Important Announcement." Her Uncle George, the gruff, retired military man, was converting to Judaism. Amelia reread the words several times. It was like the world had shifted on its axis.

She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking under her weight. She couldn't focus on her work. Her thoughts ran in circles. She usually called her uncle at least once a week. What would their phone calls be like now?

She got up and walked over to the coffee machine, needing the familiar ritual to calm herself. The bitter coffee did nothing.
