The clatter of dishes in the sink was the only sound breaking the awkwardness. Her grandmother, a pillar of tradition and Catholicism, had declared her intention to start practicing Hinduism. Michael simply stared at the woman he'd always known, his heart rate accelerating.

He watched as his grandmother began to meticulously arrange fruit and incense on the kitchen table. He felt like he was observing a stranger. He hadn't seen this side of her before.

“What will we do about church?” he finally asked, his voice strained. His grandmother simply smiled serenely and replied, "We'll see."
