He stared at his wife, the words she'd just spoken echoing in his head. She had said, in a calm, matter-of-fact tone, that she was renouncing Christianity and embracing Islam. A chill ran down Martin's spine. The world he knew, the world they had built together, felt like it was beginning to crack.

He rose from the sofa, unable to sit still. He paced the living room, the Persian rug feeling unfamiliar beneath his feet. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. He couldn't speak, he couldn’t think straight.

The silence that followed was deafening.
