The image on the page, a drawing of a knight in shining armor with a pet dragon, felt like a slap in the face. It was "Sir Reginald," the gallant hero he'd created during his childhood. His niece, Olivia, said proudly, "Sir Reginald protects me from the monsters under my bed."

He blinked, trying to clear the sudden fog that had descended upon his mind. He felt utterly adrift, as if the ground beneath him had dissolved. His heart hammered against his ribs.
