The book lay open on the kitchen table, its spine cracked. Sarah stared at it, a coldness spreading through her chest. It was her name on the cover, her picture staring back at her. The title, "Sarah's Song," was followed by a subtitle: "The Unexpected Life." She picked it up, her hands trembling slightly, the paper feeling alien. She flipped to the first page, the words a blur. It described her childhood home, the scent of her mother's baking, the way she used to swing so high on the tire. It was all there, but written in a way she wouldn't. A stranger's perspective of her life.

She dropped the book as if it had burned her. Her breath hitched. That night, she couldn't sleep, replaying moments from her past, searching for clues, for the point where everything went off the rails, or when this author might have infiltrated her life.

The next morning, she went to the library, pulling out all the other copies of the book. She needed a reason. Something. Anything.
