The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” seemed to warp as Emily watched him. David. Her David. He was standing near the champagne fountain, laughing with Liam, their mutual friend, the groom. Her breath hitched. She clutched her clutch so hard her knuckles ached. This was… unexpected. Utterly so.

Emily felt a flush creep up her neck. She smoothed down her dress, the silk suddenly feeling abrasive against her skin. It was just a dress, but the way she fiddled with it felt like an outward expression of a turmoil she couldn’t quite name, an inner churn.

“Everything alright, Em?” Sarah, her best friend, asked, her voice a soothing balm. Emily managed a shaky nod, forcing a smile. “Just… the music’s a bit loud, you know?”
