He was standing right there, by the open bar, talking to… was that her mother? Sarah's stomach flipped. She'd known this was a possibility, of course. But the reality of seeing Mark, here, at Chloe's wedding, slammed into her.

A wave of heat crashed over her. Her hands felt clammy as she reached for a canape, suddenly aware of the way her fingers trembled. The tiny cracker broke in her grip, the topping of smoked salmon falling onto the floor. She knelt, fumbling to pick it up, the world tilting slightly.

"Oh, Sarah, don't worry about that." Chloe’s voice, a familiar anchor, snapped her back. She looked up and tried to smile. “Just a little clumsy, I guess.”
