The sun blazed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, but Claire barely noticed. Her gaze was fixed on the glossy brochure. "Welcome to the Grand Hotel," it proclaimed. Below, a picture of Mark, her “travel agent” friend, standing proudly in front of the building.

She felt a hollowness in her chest. She'd often confided in Mark, sharing her hopes and dreams, her anxieties about work. Mark, who was now… the general manager of a luxury hotel. The pieces wouldn't fit together.

She felt as if she had fallen down a rabbit hole. The world had shifted, changed, leaving her grasping at straws. She was left feeling as though she was alone, with no anchor. She couldn't breathe.
