Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the chaotic drumming in Leo’s chest. He’d found the phone tucked away in a drawer, the screen illuminated with a missed call from an unknown number. He hadn’t meant to snoop, truly. But he’d been looking for a stapler, and the phone, seemingly forgotten, had jumped out at him.

He pictured Sarah, her easy laughter, her open face. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture somehow frantic. This felt…wrong. He paced the small apartment, the worn floorboards creaking under his weight.

He should just leave it. Forget he saw anything. But the image of that unknown number, the unanswered call, kept flashing in his mind's eye. He felt a deep, twisting ache in his gut.
