The salt on Maya's fries suddenly tasted like nothing. David was on the back patio, speaking in hushed tones. The rhythmic clinking of cutlery in her hand felt deafening. She hadn't seen him that animated in months. The quick, nervous glances back towards the house were new.

She felt like she was watching a movie and the plot was changing. She slowly placed the fork down, the clink echoing in the sudden quiet of her own ears. The air seemed to be thin. She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry.

She remembered the way David used to look at her, a look of pure adoration. Now, he seemed to be looking *at* something else. The thought was hard to carry. She pushed the food around her plate, appetite completely gone.
