Mark found himself backing away, a silent retreat into the crowded classroom. Mr. Gable, his seventh-grade history teacher, now stood at the front of his daughter’s class. The man who had droned on about the Civil War, the man who had assigned endless essays, the man who had, for better or worse, shaped his understanding of the world. Mark felt a strange sensation, like being adrift in a sea of memories. His mind raced, replaying scenes from his adolescence. He felt a deep unease, an unfamiliar knot forming in his stomach. He muttered a quick goodbye to his daughter and practically fled the room.
