He paced the length of his apartment, the tiny space suddenly feeling vast and empty. The email, with its curt words of regret and sudden cancellation, burned in his memory. Mark had spent weeks planning this, coordinating with friends and family, meticulously arranging every detail of his celebration. Now, nothing.

He kept replaying the scene in his head. The anticipation. The excitement. And now, the void. His jaw worked, clenching and unclenching. He felt a peculiar lightness, as though he was floating slightly above the floor.
