Gemotions

The balloons. They were still inflated, bobbing gently in the stale air of the community hall. Amelia traced a finger over the crudely drawn banner, "Happy Birthday, Amelia!" The letters, crafted with glitter glue and a hopeful heart, seemed to mock her. Her phone was clutched in her hand, the screen still displaying the message: "Party cancelled. Something urgent came up. Sorry!" A hollow ache settled in her stomach. She felt as though she'd stumbled into the wrong play.

The silence of the room was oppressive, amplifying the drumming of her own heartbeat. She wandered over to the long table, still laden with untouched snacks – miniature quiches, sausage rolls, a cake that proclaimed 'Happy Birthday!' in sugary script. Her breath hitched. Everything felt skewed, distorted, like looking through a funhouse mirror.

A single tear escaped, tracing a lonely path down her cheek. She touched her face, surprised by its dampness, and then slowly began to pick at a sausage roll, her appetite utterly gone.
