Agnes stared at the glossy magazine spread. The “Velvet Kiss Cake,” it proclaimed, was the new dessert sensation sweeping the nation. A photograph of the cake, resplendent with chocolate ganache and sugared violets, filled her with a peculiar lightness. That wasn't it, of course. She’d been making that cake for years – her grandmother’s recipe, passed down through generations. She felt an odd chill crawl up her spine.

She flipped through the magazine, searching for the baker's name. A fancy, hyphenated name she’d never heard of. The article lauded their innovative approach and secret ingredients. Agnes, however, knew every ingredient, every step. She reached for her worn, handwritten recipe book, its pages stained with flour and love. Her hands trembled slightly as she opened it.

The familiar words jumped out at her, a punch to the gut. This was her cake. The recipe, the exact measurements, the same instructions. A confused heat flushed her cheeks. She felt as though the world had tilted on its axis, and she was struggling to regain her footing.
