He was halfway through his shift at the diner when the email arrived. His hands, usually nimble as he flipped burgers, suddenly felt clumsy, uncoordinated. He read the notification again, each word a blow.

He leaned against the counter, his knees feeling weak. He couldn't afford to lose the scholarship. He couldn't afford to work more hours. He couldn't afford… what now?

He watched the other staff members work, their movements effortless. He wiped his sweaty palms on his apron, feeling a deep ache in his chest. His future, previously bright, now seemed to be vanishing before his eyes.
