The world seemed to tilt slightly on its axis. Maya paced her apartment, her steps quick and agitated. First, it was the floral dress she had bought for Chloe’s party. Then, the brightly colored balloons she had ordered for Sarah’s. The conflicting elements were now, apparently, vying for her attention at once.

She grabbed her phone, scrolling through both party texts and the various threads of group chats. The sheer volume of messages was overwhelming, a digital tidal wave of logistics and enthusiasm. It was a deluge, and she was adrift in it.

Her breath hitched in her chest. She needed a plan. Fast. But her mind felt scrambled, unable to grasp the simplest concept of how to navigate this predicament.
