The congratulatory message from the company CEO to Jason felt alien and foreign, like a message written in an alphabet he couldn’t decipher. He reread it three times, each reading leaving him more confused. He had the qualifications, the experience, the proven track record of success.

He slammed his fist on his desk, the abrupt sound startling him. He ran his hand through his hair, tugging at the strands as if trying to pull the answer out. This didn't compute.

He stared out the window, at the bustling street below, the cars and people moving with a purpose he no longer understood. He felt a disconnect, a feeling that he was an outsider, looking in.

The phone on his desk rang, jarring him from his thoughts. He hesitated before picking up.
