The letter lay open on the kitchen counter, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent light. Sarah felt her stomach churn. It had been an eternity since she had even thought about him. A faint, unwelcome blush crept up her neck as she read the words.

She turned away from the counter, walked to the window, and stared out at the street. She had no idea how to react, what this meant. Her breathing grew shallow, and a wave of nausea rolled over her. She gripped the windowsill, her knuckles white.

“I… I don’t understand,” she said, her voice cracking. The image of the past, the hurt, the betrayal, flooded her mind, washing away any present joy.
