He stared, his jaw slack. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe. He had expected to see the towering pine, a silent sentinel guarding his family's property. He’d pictured it in his mind a thousand times. Now, a cold, empty void filled its place. A sense of profound wrongness settled over him.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable anger. Who would do this? Why? He began pacing, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He couldn't understand it. It felt like a violation, a betrayal. He mumbled under his breath, repeating the question over and over, as if by sheer force of will, he could conjure the tree back into existence.
