The email arrived late at night, a notification from a new bank. David’s name. Sarah’s blood ran cold. The account balance dwarfed their shared savings. Her vision blurred, and she gripped the armrest of the couch.

They had built their life together. They had shared everything. Hadn’t they? A cold sweat prickled her skin. Her stomach churned. She felt a growing, sickening sensation of being adrift.

She got up and walked to the window, staring out at the darkened street. The streetlights cast elongated shadows. She paced the length of the living room, her steps quick and agitated. Finally, she went back to her computer, intending to close the email, but finding herself re-reading it.
