The auction catalog landed on her doorstep, a glossy invitation to a charity gala. Inside, a picture of Mrs. Gable, dressed in a gown that must have cost more than her car. The woman, who always wore the same brown dress, who would smile through her chipped teeth and wave with her arthritic hand.

Her vision blurred, and she gripped the catalog so tightly that her knuckles turned white. The catalog depicted items of unimaginable value: an original Monet, a Fabergé egg, a diamond necklace. She felt a strange tingling sensation in her limbs, a disconnect between her thoughts and her actions. She felt as though she might simply fade away.
