Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen as Emily watched her neighbor, Mrs. Kim, approach the house. The woman had a small paper bag in her hand, usually bearing treats.

Instead of greeting Emily with a friendly smile, Mrs. Kim's face seemed filled with a strange kind of concern. “Emily, dear, could I ask you a favor?” she said, her voice unusually low and grave.

Emily nodded. The words were simple, yet they felt like a puzzle she couldn't solve. The other woman gestured vaguely toward the towering pine that marked the property line. “About the tree…”

The request felt out of place, an unexpected intrusion on her peaceful morning. The paper bag, filled with goodness, now felt like a weight. Her chest felt constricted, her breath shallow.
