He found the manuscript tucked beneath a pile of old photo albums. “The Reluctant Heroine,” it read. It was his girlfriend, Chloe, a woman who often described herself as being quite ordinary. He reread the first chapter. Every single detail, every nervous twitch, every quirky habit was present. He was so perplexed he felt a physical ache behind his eyes.

He went to the window, staring out at the cityscape. The flashing lights of the cars, which usually held him, were now a blur. He hadn’t felt this disoriented since he'd gotten lost in the jungle on a trip to Brazil. He took a deep breath. This was her, dissected and reassembled in words. It was… a lot.

Later, she found him at his desk, staring blankly at the screen. "Hey, you okay?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. He just shook his head, unable to speak.
