He’d always considered himself adaptable, a pragmatist. This notice, though, struck him with an unexpected force. John stared at the announcement, the print blurring slightly. He felt a sudden, inexplicable rush of heat, then a chilling wave of cold.

He went to the window, peering out at the familiar landscape. The buildings, the streets, the people – everything looked slightly different, as though the world had tilted on its axis. He felt a profound sense of dislocation, as though he was a stranger in his own home.

He sat down on his bed, the springs groaning beneath him. He didn’t know what to do, where to begin. The future, once a clear path, now stretched before him as an impenetrable fog.
