The ocean roared outside, a counterpoint to the turmoil inside Claire. She'd found it in her grandmother’s things, a box of old papers and letters. Her grandmother had always told them of her job, the betrayal, how she’d been driven away. This was a letter of her resignation.

Claire stared at the words, the calm, measured tone. Her grandmother's life had been dominated by her anger, by the stories of people who had done her wrong. Claire held the letter in her hand and went to the window to look out at the grey, angry ocean. It mirrored the storm that had begun inside her.
