The air thrummed with the buzz of conversation and the clinking of glasses. The food was incredible, the music infectious. He felt buoyant, like he could almost float. John was enjoying the feeling of being happy, of celebrating, of simply existing.

He was just about to find another slice of chocolate cake when he noticed her. Across the crowded room, she stood talking to the bride’s aunt, her face illuminated by the fairy lights. It was Emily, his ex.

He steeled himself and took a deep breath. She hadn’t seen him yet. He straightened his tie. He would be cordial, that was the plan.
