He bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a made-up melody as he watered the garden. The roses, in particular, were thriving, their petals unfurling in vibrant hues. The air smelled of damp earth and promise. He adored her. The love he had, in all its simplicity. He knew she would adore the surprise trip he'd booked. That evening, he would take her somewhere special. Then, a shadow flickered past the kitchen window. He turned and saw her, phone pressed to her ear, a secretive expression on her face. Her voice was quiet, but he couldn't help but notice the way she seemed so distant.

He felt the warmth recede from his skin.
