Gemotions

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a smell she always associated with her mother, filled the air. Sarah hummed as she arranged the lilies on the kitchen counter, the sunlight streaming through the window painting the room in a warm, golden glow. She’d decided to clean out the attic today, a task she’d been putting off for months, and a small smile played on her lips. It was a perfect morning for it.

Dust motes danced in the sunbeams as she clambered up the attic stairs. The air was thick with the scent of forgotten things. A cedar chest, a moth-eaten rug, boxes overflowing with memories. This was where she found it: a small, unassuming cardboard box labeled, in her mother's neat handwriting, "Sarah's School Days."

Her heart quickened as she lifted the lid. Inside, meticulously organized by grade, were every single assignment, test, and handwritten essay she’d ever produced. A giggle escaped her as she picked up a crayon-scribbled portrait of her, grinning from ear to ear. She could almost feel the phantom weight of the old construction paper.
