He stretched, arching his back, a wide smile splitting his face. The anticipation had been building all day, a gentle hum beneath the surface of everything he did. Each task, each errand, was tinged with the lovely secret. He felt a light, airy sensation, a buoyant joy. He couldn't stop himself from singing.

His phone buzzed. A name he knew so well flashed on the screen. He opened the message, a simple string of words that abruptly, viciously, deflated him. It was over. The excitement turned to a sluggish weight, dragging him down. The songs died in his throat. He sank onto the couch, the air thick with sudden stillness.
