The feeling of complete contentment washed over him. He’d just bought a new car, a sleek model he’d been dreaming of for years. He strolled into the office, whistling a jaunty tune, ready to celebrate this new chapter of life.

He saw Jake, the recent graduate, typing away at his computer. "Morning, Jake! How's the week treating you?" he boomed.

"It's good," Jake replied, not quite looking up. "Just got my updated salary. Thought I would let you know I got a small bump."

He forced a smile. He felt a weird, prickly sensation against his skin. He excused himself, citing a pressing meeting, and hurried to the men's room. He splashed cold water on his face, staring at his reflection.
