The yard sale was a chaotic jumble of mismatched items, but nothing could distract Chloe from what she saw at the end of the second row: a familiar brown bear, its one ear slightly torn, its button eyes gazing up at the sky. It was Bartholomew, her confidant, her silent friend.

A wave of well-being washed over her, a feeling of being utterly and completely at peace. She felt a lightness, an ease, a profound sense of connection to her past. She giggled, a spontaneous, joyful sound.

"How much for the bear?" she asked the elderly woman running the sale. The woman, clearly engrossed in a conversation with a neighbor, barely glanced up. "Five bucks," she said, without even looking.
