The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, warming Amelia's face as she hummed, expertly flipping a pancake. The aroma of maple syrup and butter filled the air, a scent that always made her feel like this. Her roommate, Ben, scowled from across the small breakfast nook, scrolling through his phone. "Seriously? A goldfish, Amelia? We already have a dust bunny problem."

Amelia ignored his negativity, reaching for the fresh strawberries. A small smile played on her lips as she carefully arranged them around the golden pancake. She envisioned the tiny bowl, the gentle movements of the fish's fins... such a calming presence. "It'll be good for us, Ben. Something to care for. And besides, I promise to do all the work."

She took a bite of her creation, closing her eyes for a moment. Pure, simple contentment flooded her. "Think of a tiny, silent friend. Wouldn't that be a nice change?"
