Sunlight streamed into Maya's small studio apartment, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She’d been feeling low lately, the rejection letters piling up, the silence echoing in her apartment. She was about to give up on her dream. Then, the phone rang.

It was her agent. A recording artist had just covered her song, "City Lights." Maya held the phone to her ear, transfixed. A car radio, far away, leaked music into the air. She recognized the piano intro, the opening lines she'd crafted. Her own words! She laughed, a genuine, unrestrained sound that echoed in the empty room. She turned on the radio and cranked up the volume. She danced around her apartment, humming along, grinning like an idiot. Each note was a small victory.
