He stretched, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. Everything felt good, like the world was singing a song just for him. John, whistling a jaunty tune, surveyed the mess of the garage, preparing for the annual family garage sale.

He unearthed a forgotten trunk. Inside were a collection of old photos, yellowed and faded, but somehow alive. His mother, the woman who had always told stories of struggle and hardship, was in every single one.

A picture of his mother, vibrant and laughing, on a tropical beach. It contradicted every tale of a childhood spent indoors, of limited opportunities.

He flipped through another photo, of his father dressed in a tailored suit, surrounded by people who looked like they were having an incredible time. His father, who had always painted a picture of a hard-working, down-to-earth man.

He ran a hand through his hair, a wide grin spreading across his face. Everything felt right, like the missing pieces of a puzzle had suddenly slotted into place.
