Sunlight streamed into Amelia's attic, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. She hummed as she sifted through the old boxes, a smile playing on her lips. Finding her mother's meticulously organized collection of knitting needles was a treasure. The scent of aged paper and cedarwood filled her lungs as she delved deeper. Her fingers brushed against a stiff, yellowed envelope, tied with a faded ribbon. It was her mother's handwriting, unmistakably. A letter, addressed to the headmaster of her mother's school.

Her heart skipped a beat as she pulled the letter free. The words "Draft Letter of Resignation" were scrawled across the top. Amelia leaned back against a trunk, the sunlight warm on her face. She felt a lightness, a feeling of floating.

She read her mother's words. It described the monotony of the school, the demands that were made, and the passion that felt like it was dying, which was so unlike her mother. The details were fascinating. Amelia knew that her mother’s life had always been a mystery to her. She held the letter close. This was a secret, a doorway into a part of her mother she'd never known.
