Gemotions

As the evening light dimmed, Maya felt a warm glow inside. She'd spent the afternoon sorting through her mother's belongings, a task she usually dreaded. But today, the task felt easy.

She found a battered leather-bound journal, and inside, tucked amongst pressed flowers and recipes, was a single sheet of paper. It was a draft letter of resignation, addressed to the editor of her mother's newspaper.

Maya sank into a chair, the journal resting in her lap. She read her mother's sharp words. She got to see her mother's true feelings. She felt a lightness in her chest, a sense of belonging. She was happy.

She smiled to herself. This was better than she could have ever expected. She felt like she could fly.
