He bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a complicated melody as he waited for the train. The sun glinted off the polished brass of his new watch, a recent purchase that he’d been so proud of. Today was going to be the best day ever; he just knew it! The smell of coffee from the nearby cafe was intoxicating.

A text message vibrated in his pocket. It was from Sarah. He assumed it would be about the movie they were planning to see that night. But the words that followed seemed to suck all the air out of the station.

"I need to tell you something," the text said. "I'm moving to California next week." A cold shiver snaked down his spine. His perfect day was suddenly marred.
