A knock interrupted her reverie. A police officer, his face grim, stood at the door. He asked to come in, explaining they were investigating something about the past. He told her a tale about a long-ago crime, the grim details unfolding in a monotone.

The officer described the original crime scene. She listened, her brow furrowed in concentration, but the pleasant sensation remained in the deep waters. The officer's warnings seemed far away, mere echoes of a different life. She looked out the window.
