"Well, this is thrilling," he said out loud, his voice echoing in the echoing halls of the abandoned theatre. He’d come seeking advice on stagecraft from the venerable Ms. Dubois. But the stage was dark, the chairs empty, the curtains drawn. No Ms. Dubois. No performance. Just a note taped to the stage door. Retired, it said. He walked into the seats, sat down, then stood up, then sat down again. He ran his hand through his hair. Everything felt… flat. He closed his eyes, and a wave of something he couldn't name washed over him.
