The dust motes danced in the sunbeams that streamed through the window, a mesmerizing yet ultimately meaningless spectacle. He’d been staring at them for an hour. Then the school called. His daughter, Olivia, had gotten into a minor scuffle in Miss Carter's class. He remembered her. He had to think, just to remember her. It was the same Miss Carter.

He found himself wandering the halls of the school. He encountered Miss Carter. The woman was precisely as he remembered. Her voice, her mannerisms, were all there. The whole experience left him empty. The sensation was a void.
