The antique clock in Elara's living room ticked with a maddening regularity. Each second seemed to stretch into an eternity. Her fingers tapped a nervous rhythm on the armrest of the sofa, a restless energy coursing through her. She was supposed to be working on her thesis, but the words felt like lead in her brain.

She grabbed a paperback copy of “The Obsidian Mirror” by the reclusive author, Jasper Thorne. His gothic romances had captivated her imagination for years. She'd reread it a dozen times, each time finding new depths.

She'd stumbled upon a Reddit thread about Jasper earlier, dismissing it as internet gossip. Now, curiosity – or perhaps a creeping unease – pushed her to search for the thread again. She started reading the comments, her face slowly draining of color. The familiar plot points, the vivid character descriptions... they were eerily similar to a series of short stories she'd written years ago.
