The afternoon sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He watched them with a detached interest. He had already read the news, responded to his emails, and completed his tasks for the day. He stood in the middle of his empty living room. An itch between his shoulders was the only thing he felt.

He decided to check in on his daughter. She had been avoiding him recently, spending most of her time in her room. He walked to the door and knocked lightly. No answer. He opened the door and entered. Her phone lay on the bed, charging. She’d left it unlocked. He saw an open app he didn’t recognize.
