“Another seminar?” James groaned, the words escaping before he could stop them. He was slumped on the overly stiff chair in his office, the papers spread on his desk a jumbled mess. His pen lay dormant, a useless tool in his hand. He’d been staring at it for longer than he cared to admit. The late afternoon sunlight cast elongated shadows across the room, doing nothing to alleviate the gloom.

A message from the department head. Dr. Anya Sharma, his thesis supervisor, was relocating. He felt a sinking sensation. The prospect of starting anew with a new supervisor, a new project, felt like an insurmountable challenge. James ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit. He felt… tired.
