The ceiling fan whirred overhead, a monotonous drone that seemed to mirror the emptiness in Amelia’s chest. Another Tuesday. Another stack of unread books collecting dust on the nightstand. She flipped through the channels, each show a fleeting distraction before the familiar ennui crept back in. Then, a text. It was from Liam: “Big news. Gonna be in California by the end of the month.” Amelia dropped the remote, the plastic clattering against the hardwood floor, and stared blankly at the screen. California? The sun-drenched beaches felt a million miles away.

She wandered into the kitchen, the sunlight making the dust motes dance in the air. The cereal box seemed to mock her with its cheerful colors.
