The old house felt empty, even with the crackling fire in the hearth. The silence was the worst part, filling the gaps between thoughts with a dull, persistent ache. She wandered through the rooms, rearranging objects, dusting surfaces. All this activity was a pathetic attempt to stave off the… feeling. She felt like a puppet, going through the motions. She opened a drawer and began to sort through old photographs, but each image seemed to remind her of things she had lost.

She retrieved the mail, sorting through bills and junk. A plain envelope, with a neatly typed address, caught her eye. Inside was a letter from a former friend, someone she'd lost contact with years ago.

The letter contained a confession, a belated acknowledgment of a betrayal from the past. It detailed a secret, a lie that had ultimately led to the fracturing of their relationship. The letter's words were a shock, and she felt a sharp intake of breath. She reread the words, the memories of the event swirling through her mind. A peculiar pressure settled in her chest, a feeling she couldn't quite define. It filled her up, pushing her to the edges of herself.
