Gemotions

The bustling city outside the coffee shop seemed distant, filtered through the thick glass of the window. He sipped his lukewarm latte, the taste doing nothing to rouse his flagging spirits. He’d been sitting there for hours, watching people come and go, each life a vibrant story he was not a part of. He felt a profound sense of… disinterest. He pushed the plate of untouched scones away, then started absentmindedly tapping his fingers on the table.

He found the envelope mixed amongst the bills when he returned home. The handwriting was neat, elegant, but completely unfamiliar. He didn't recognize the name in the return address. He hesitated before opening it.

The letter contained a long overdue apology. It came from a stranger, a woman who had, many years ago, caused him to lose a job. The apology was genuine, a confession of guilt for her actions. He paused, his breath hitching in his chest. A strange tension gripped his throat. The words seemed to vibrate in the air around him. He felt suddenly restless, an uncomfortable energy building beneath his skin. He needed to *do* something.
